Rheumatology

What is Rheumatology?

Tendons, ligaments, bones, muscles, and joints are all impacted by rheumatic diseases. Numerous varieties of arthritis, a term for ailments that impact your joints, are among them. We also deal with autoimmune diseases. They are sometimes referred to as musculoskeletal illnesses. Typical signs include aching joints, the inability of a joint, or an inflamed area. Rheumatology is the name of the branch of medicine that deals with these kinds of conditions.

An internist with additional training in the diagnosis (detection) and treatment of disorders that affect the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons is referred to as a rheumatologist. These conditions may result in joint abnormalities, discomfort, stiffness, and edema.

When to Consult with a Rheumatologist

Most people occasionally have joint, bone, or muscular pain. If the pain does not go away as one would anticipate, more testing may be required. The initial assessment is typically conducted by a primary care, urgent care, or emergency room clinician. They may suggest that you be evaluated in rheumatology if there is a worry about an underlying rheumatic condition. Sometimes, other healthcare professionals may advise that you visit a rheumatologist, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, chiropractors, orthopedic surgeons, or other medical specialists.

If you have autoimmune or rheumatic disease relatives, or if your symptoms have gotten dramatically worse over time, you should think about consulting a rheumatologist sooner rather than later. When first treated, some of the signs and symptoms may get better or disappear temporarily, but they may occasionally come back if you discontinue the medication. A rheumatology evaluation might be required if the symptoms keep coming back.

Some rheumatic disorders carry a risk of joint injury. Therefore, it's imperative to consult a rheumatologist as soon as possible. Faster identification and treatment of many diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, can save joint damage from becoming irreversible. Treatment may not always be able to undo this damage, and it could even be permanent. We encourage you not to wait on your evaluation.
