Dr. Antonio Privitera is an internationally renowned Consultant in General and Colorectal Surgery, practising at both Medcare Royal Specialty Hospital and Medcare Medical Centre. He has had extensive training in general and colorectal surgery in world-famous institutions including The John Radcliffe in Oxford, UK, The University College of London, UK, St. Guy’s St. Thomas’ Hospital in London, UK and the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. He is currently the General Secretary of the Emirates Colorectal Society and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCS)

He holds a Fellowship Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS), a fellowship of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery (FASCRS), a fellowship in Minimally Access Surgery (FMAS), a fellowship in Colorectal Surgery from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota (USA), a fellowship in Colorectal Surgery from the University College of London and St Guy’s St Thomas’ Hospital (UK) and an Advanced Laparoscopic fellowship from South Korea.

Dr. Privitera is the only surgeon in the world to have both a Mayo Clinic (Rochester-USA) Colorectal Fellowship and a London Colorectal fellowship. He worked as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon in renowned UK University Hospital. Subsequently, he moved to Saudi Arabia where he was the Section Head of Colorectal Surgery of the Regional Tertiary Referral Centre of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia and also the Program Director of the Eastern Province Colorectal Fellowship. His team performed the first robotic colorectal resection for cancer with the Xi Robot in Saudi Arabia. He was Chief of Colorectal Surgery at King Fahad Specialist Hospital, Dammam (SA). He was the Lead Colorectal Surgeon at Tawam Hospital-John Hopkins in Abu Dhabi and Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at the NMC Group, UAE. He uses the newest minimally invasive techniques (VAAFT, Laser, THD, laparoscopic and robotic techniques) that significantly reduce the discomfort after surgery and produce fast healing.

Dr. Privitera’s main interests are bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), anorectal and pelvic floor diseases (haemorrhoids, fistula, fissure, prolapse, pilonidal sinus, obstructed defecation, faecal incontinence, constipation) hernias of the abdominal wall, abdominal wall reconstruction, gallbladder diseases, laparoscopic and robotics. He performs laparoscopic and robotic surgery, laser haemorrhoid surgery, laser and endoscopic anal fistula surgery, laser anal fissure surgery, and laser and endoscopic pilonidal sinus surgery. He is proficient in treating rectal prolapse, colon cancer, rectal cancer and gallbladder stones. Another area of his expertise is the treatment of abdominal wall hernias. He has introduced new techniques in the treatment of inguinal hernias, lumbar hernias and umbilical hernias and has extensively published and researched on the subject and was awarded an MD and PhD.

Dr. Privitera is the author of the first publication in an American colorectal journal (DCR) of the haemorrhoidal artery ligation technique (THD). He speaks English and Italian, fluently.
