Dr. Shahid A Merchant is an Interventional Cardiologist at Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital, Sharjah. He completed his MBBS and MD in Internal Medicine from Seth G S Medical College, Mumbai University, India. He holds a Diplomate from the National Boards of Cardiology (DNB), New Delhi and has also completed a DM Cardiology from Seth G S Medical College, Mumbai University, India. He holds a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology from the University of Rouen, France, and one in Interventional Cardiology from Harvard Medical School, USA. He also has a Fellowship from the European Society of Cardiology and the American Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.
Dr. Merchant is a member of the Heart Failure Society of America Maryland (USA), the International Society of Heart & Lung Transplant Texas (USA), the Society of Cardiac Angiography & Intervention (SCAI USA), the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and the Indian Society of Heart & Lung Transplant. He is also a Life Member of the Cardiological Society of India and the Association of Medical Consultants of India. He is the Founder and Course Director of Cardio Diabetes Medicine, the Heart Failure Foundation of India (HFFI) and the Fellowship of Advanced Heart Failure.
Dr. Merchant has three decades of experience in interventional cardiology. He has worked at several renowned hospitals across the globe. His illustrious career commenced as a House officer in Medicine at the K. E. M., Hospital in Mumbai where he later served as a Registrar in Internal Medicine followed by a Registrar in Cardiology. He was a Lecturer in Cardiology at the K. E. M. Hospital for a bit and then became a Fellow at Hospital Multizonale, University of Varese, Italy, learning about directional Atherectomy and Balloon Mitral dilatation. He did a clinical fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Hospital Charles Nicolle, Rouen, France in the use of Balloon Angioplasty, Stents, Valvuloplasty & TAVR and was a visiting fellow in Interventional Cardiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital & Harvard Medical School, Boston, using Lasers and Rotablator. Dr. Merchant worked as a Consultant Cardiologist at King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and then in a similar position at the prestigious Breach Candy Hospital and the Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre, both in Mumbai, India. He also practised at Al Diyafa Medical Centre, Dubai, and UAE Starcare Hospital, Muscat, Oman. He was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist to the Dubai Health Authority & Oman MOH.
He has done pioneering work in the field of perfusion balloon angioplasty and stents. At present, he is actively involved in complex coronary angioplasty, physiology and imaging, cath lab interventions in Cardiodiabetic patients, bioresorbable soluble scaffolds, drug-coated balloons, renal denervation therapy, TAVI procedures and management of advanced heart failure. He has successfully performed angiography, FFR, IVUS, OCT, and complex coronary Angioplasty including left main bifurcation, CTO, multivessel disease, cardiogenic shock, Valvuloplasty, TAVI, carotid, renal stenting, critical limb ischemia interventions and bioresorbable scaffold implant. He has treated advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, impella, ECMO, LVAD and heart transplant.
Dr. Merchant has participated in and presented papers at various international conferences in the USA, France, Italy, Africa, China and Dubai. He regularly conducts live angioplasty workshops and lectures in interventional cardiology in India and worldwide. He speaks English, Hindi and Marathi fluently.
